How Can I Find Out If A Brand Is Ethical?

I wanted to create this step-by-step guide to investigating brands to determine their ethics.

When I was first trying to start shopping ethically, I had no idea where to look, other than at fairtrade certification labels. I knew there must be companies with strong ethics out there, but was overwhelmed by the fact that I couldn't be sure. Fast-forward almost seven years, and I still can't be 100% sure, but I am more skilled in my researching. Because ethical fashion is becoming more and more mainstream, many companies are trying to jump on board the fair fashion/food/beauty/etc. train. Some companies are genuinely working hard at changing the ways that they do business, but unfortunately, too many companies are also just hiring better writers to make them look good.

So, here are a few starting steps to investigating brands. Luckily, there are a ton of people out there who are passionate about transparency, so often times, I find many people have done a lot of work, all in the name of making ethical easier.
